I love a good trench and have several. My most treasured is Topshop and it is almost ten years old. I, surprise surprise, like to keep things as classic as possible without any added embellishments like hardware, pleats, pattern or wide cuffs. Classic trench color is preferred, but not required.
DOUBLE BREASTED & BELTED

I am trying to find a replacement for my Topshop as it’s rather worn in and stained at this point. All of the above are good substitutes - oversized, double breasted, belted. Depending on the style, I would opt to size up anywhere from one to three sizes to maximize comfort/desired oversized-ness and for a more exaggerated belted shape (although the men’s California Art’s trench sounds like it runs “true” to size - anyone know anything about the brand??). The below Phoebe Philo is a pipe-dream and the holy grail even though it’s black (also comes in cream). I also came across this H&M after the above layout was made.
SINGLE BREASTED SWING

In order to switch things up, I’ve been looking for a single breasted, slightly a-frame or just not too straight, non belted, just pasted my knees - tea length trench with a collar. I have been hunting for over a year and wanted the last piece by The Row. Although I am a firm believer in “cry once, buy once” the over $4k price tag is beyond my comfort zone. Instead, I ended up with the above Studio Nicholson. I have honestly not worn it that much because I would prefer a richer color, but the shape is perfect. We will see what happens this fall and winter. Again, size up.
SINGLE BREASTED BELTED

I ordered the above Studio Nicholson when I ordered the non belted one in the previous section thinking it would be more trench like (aka not viscose/wool blend), but I loved it anyway so I kept it. It’s glorious. It won’t help me in the rain, but it is one of my only non-black or dark coats.
